Rainbow babylon race map

I was inspired by Tristamk's simple-run-33-techno-race_4. This map only has two textures: a yellow one and skytexture. But with this, a lot of patterns are created which are used to make platforms, pillars, and wall decorations. I was really excited when I found out that by replacing the yellow texture by a white one, and changing up my color gradient script, that I could color such a map with a color gradient. (instead of just placing down colored cubes which I had done previously)

Ever since I found out about this I wanted to create my own map which I could color gradient. I started by creating lots of patterns and soon Gerwin, Ao1|PointBlank, ISMC|TristamK, and AriKani all helped me with this to create a very detailed race map with lots of patterns which I could color. Thanks for all the help guys, I couldn't have done this all by myself. I'm really glad how this turned out!

There are two versions of this map. The colored one you see in the screenshots, 'babylon'. And a black & white version which is also part of the ISMC_race series by Tristamk: ISMC_race-39_WhiteBabylon

I created another race map, Quantumchromodynamics. I used rounded cubes with the glass texture vscrolled really fast (999999999999999999999 999999999999999999) and vcolored in various colors. Also I decided to use some of my patterned tubes in a race map.

  How to create a zeromod sauerbraten race server

I run my servers on a cheap VPS. You can also run it on a computer at home but in that case you need to port-forward your router and make sure you set it up securely with a firewall.

create a debian (or ubuntu) vps, and add your SSH key, then run the following commands:

connect over ssh as root, replace the IP address with yours:

ssh root@

update system and install required packages:
apt update
apt upgrade
apt install git binutils build-essential zlib1g-dev libgeoip-dev libsdl2-dev libsdl2-mixer-dev libsdl2-image-dev libgeoip-dev libmaxminddb-dev psmisc curl tmux

add the sauerbraten user which will run the server program, and switch to that user:
adduser sauerbraten
su sauerbraten

download the git repositories containing the sauerbraten racing server source code and configuration files:
git clone https://github.com/andrius4669/zeromod-sauerbraten
git clone https://github.com/andrius4669/sauer-configs

compile the binary executable:
cd ~/zeromod-sauerbraten/src

create the 'srv' directory, and copy the compiled binary executable to it, renaming it to 'racing':
mkdir ~/srv
cp ~/zeromod-sauerbraten/src/sauer_server ~/srv/racing

copy geoip scripts into the 'srv' directory:
cp ~/zeromod-sauerbraten/download_geoip.sh ~/srv/
cp ~/zeromod-sauerbraten/download_mmdb.sh ~/srv/

execute the scripts to download the geoip database files:
cd ~/srv/

copy updateracing.sh to the home dir:
cp ~/sauer-configs/racing/updateracing.sh ~/

run the updateracing script which downloads necessary files:

copy the racing config file 'server-init.cfg' to the 'srv' dir:
cp ~/racing/config/server-init.cfg ~/srv/

and edit it to set your preferences. Some things you might want to set:
maxclients 100
serverdesc "^f2Cool ^f0Race ^f5Server"  // server description (name) with colors
servermotd "Welcome to the cool race server!"
servernodamage_global 2  // so nobody can do damage to other players or blast them away with grenades or rockets
// players who go into editmode are disqualified and can not finish the race without reconnecting.
// Setting racemode_hideeditors to 0 keeps them visible to other players and spectators. Setting it to 1 would hide them.
racemode_hideeditors 0  
s_announce "join our community at insert website/irc/discord/etc"
s_announce "cheating on this server will get your ip banned"

create the dir for the race maps:
mkdir -p ~/srv/packages/base

download the reflex racing maps and copy them into the previously created dir:
git clone https://github.com/arCABAL/reflexracingmaps-sauerbraten.git
cp ~/reflexracingmaps-sauerbraten/maps/*.ogz ~/srv/packages/base/

The makerot.sh shell script generates the map rotation file. I've edited it so it can be run from every directory, and so that it places the rotation file (rot.cfg) into the right directory, and so that it automatically makes the server reload the configuration which also reloads the rotation file.

edit ~/racing/makerot.sh like this:
add this at the top, after the hashbang first line:
cd ~/srv/packages/base/

add this at the very bottom of makerot.sh:
mv rot.cfg ../../
echo 'Map rotation file updated'
killall -HUP racing
echo 'Server configuration reinitialized'

your makerot.sh should look like this:
keep in mind, the makerot.sh script will have to be run each time maps are added or removed. you could set it up so this script runs every few minutes but I haven't.

create a startserver.sh script in ~/srv/
cd ~/srv
exec ./racing

create a new tmux session in which the server process will run and execute the script to start the server:
cd srv

run these as root
allow sauerbraten user login over ssh:
cp /root/.ssh /home/sauerbraten/.ssh
chown -R sauerbraten:sauerbraten /home/sauerbraten/.ssh

add sauerbraten user to sudo group
usermod -aG sudo sauerbraten

Very simple FFA and Duel map, sequel to Unworld, with layout really inspired by Oddworld. Needless to say, I made it all from scratch, not based on actual 'oddworld' map. All major and minor FFA items present, lights are calculated on precision 16 and error 4, and PVS are generated. Have fun, and tell me if something can/should be fixed, I'll update this once in a while.

Based on "Forgotten Shrine of Azag", and with maptitle that is Tay|Z's joke... Layout is fun I may say, but I think I overdid texture pallet a bit... I could use less textures. Anyway, map has quite complex geometry for Deathmatch map, so it can be also used as reference for new mappers. Smile
